Urban Home Addition
Apicella + Bunton was engaged for the addition and renovation of a house considered to be the first modern residence in New Haven. The design includes a new entertainment space and a new pool house at the rear of this 1936, International Style home originally designed by Carina Eaglesfield Mortimer.
Highlighted against the strong forms of the main portion of the house, the new addition maintains a sense of continuity with the existing structure while establishing an identity of its own.
The new double-height addition provides space for dining and entertaining while a stone floor runs seamlessly from interior to exterior, allowing gatherings to spill out onto the adjacent patio. The new pool house contains a small sauna, shower and dressing room. Like the new addition, the pool house is clad in zinc panels, establishing an exciting visual dialogue with the existing structure.
