Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts

Apicella + Bunton’s design includes a large public plaza fronting the building that forms a connection to the adjacent park, creating a dynamic synergy between outdoor activities in the park and events scheduled for the Center. The expansive glass curtain wall fronting the street allows for views into the main lobby and pre-function spaces, enhancing the urban connections and the vibrancy of the neighborhood. To further strengthen the building’s urban character, the proposed parking scheme leaves open the option for future development on the site.

Programming needs for the performance hall required flexibility for use by the Symphony, Broadway, lecture, and popular music performances. To meet the needs of these varied performance types, a hybrid hall reminiscent of early twentieth century theater designs was created. A large orchestra level and multi-tiered side boxes allow for audience members to maintain a close distance to the stage, without compromising sight lines. Grand arches sweep across the front ceiling to further create the feeling of closeness and provide scale to the room. An exclusive Grand Tier level tucked beneath the balcony provides additional premium seating. For smaller performances, rear areas of the hall can be sectioned off, creating a more intimate feeling.
