Sterling Memorial Library International Reading Room
We renovated the International Room and the Franke Reading Room as part of an enabling project to refurbish the 1963 Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library building. Housed within Yale University’s Sterling Memorial Library, the International Room was repurposed from an exhibit space showcasing Yale’s international programs to a flexible space that could accommodate classes, meetings, and functions. Our design embraces the architectural character of the space and celebrates the rich detailing and texture of the original built-in bookshelves and carved casework. Newly designed custom wood furniture allows for multiple space configurations while maintaining the room’s historical integrity. The Franke Reading Room currently serves as the temporary home of the Beinecke Reading Room and staff offices.
We modified the existing stack area to include a space for material processing and new mechanical equipment that maintains the critical environmental conditions required to preserve the precious materials.
