Lanman Wright Hall, Yale University
Apicella + Bunton renovated the 52,000 square foot dormitory located on Old Campus at Yale University. The Late Gothic Revival building, erected in 1912 and last renovated in 1993, was designed by William Adams Delano, and houses freshmen. The building is organized around six separate entries, each with a stairway accessing five levels of residential suites and shared restrooms.
The project includes extensive exterior restoration, a comprehensive lighting upgrade, improvements to the mechanical and electrical systems, and extensive architectural renovations to the restrooms and finishes throughout the building.
The residential suites have been updated with new wood flooring, doors, and lighting. The original millwork was refinished in warmer colors, and redesigned window benches in the common rooms allow for more efficient heat flow into the suites. The original glazed terracotta tile in the stairways was restored; new wood wainscot, doors, and trim were added at the landing, giving warmth to the suite entries. The restrooms were completely renovated: a colorful tile pattern and improved lighting enliven the spaces.
