Apicella + Bunton was engaged to design an extensive addition and renovation to a vacation home in Vermont. Located on a steeply sloped site, the house was designed in a very distinctive style, characterized by large cantilevered projections from a small building footprint.
As the house is used extensively for large family gatherings, the clients wished to increase common areas and to add a second, more private wing. To create a harmonious addition, Apicella + Bunton drew upon the existing architectural vocabulary to design a series of dynamic roof forms that project up and out from the house.
These roof planes enclose additional floor area, keeping the building footprint sufficiently compact to fit within the constraints of the site. The upturns of the roofs are supported by custom mahogany window walls, creating a fluid transition between interior and exterior and maximizing the dramatic, panoramic views.
The clients’ private suite is located to the west of the existing structure and is accessed by a two-story glass enclosed bridge.
