Grossman House for Global Perspectives, Lafayette College
Apicella + Bunton executed a full-building renovation of a 12,000 square foot historic fraternity house on the campus of Lafayette College. The Grossman House for Global Perspectives is part of a new initiative to create an intimate community with deep roots in globalization and international studies.
The three-story brick structure was modified to accommodate new student housing in configurations of three- and four-bedroom suites. The residents are one-third international students, one-third with experience abroad and another third without. The units are organized around a kitchen, bath and a large common area.
Significant structural enhancements were required to correct long-standing deficiencies and extensive fire damage. The renovation included the addition of a number of building amenities including a reading room, a social room and a large landscaped terrace. The terrace includes a circular plaza that is used for special events and student gatherings. Low retaining walls modulate the change in elevation from the building to the street and provide places for people to sit. The indigenous, low-maintenance plantings provide seasonal interest and enhance the building’s presence on the street.
A grand stair creates a new entry along High Street strengthening the presence of the building and enhancing the pedestrian experience. The project earned LEED Gold certification.
