George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater
The Eccles Theater is the region’s premier entertainment venue and a contemporary landmark for Salt Lake City. The project was carefully coordinated with city and county arts groups to provide a flexible performance space for local and visiting performers on a relatively compact urban site.
The design of the 2,500-seat Delta Hall recalls the southern Utah canyons on a starry night, and was designed to support dance, amplified and natural acoustic performances. Three tiers of seating with excellent sight lines provide an intimate experience for both audiences and performers.
The lobby on Main Street features a glass wall which can open to extend gatherings and events onto the sidewalk. The interior features cypress wood ceilings which extend above the outdoor limestone-framed terraces, and glass railings designed by glass artist Paul Housberg.
The program and design of the building on Regent Street was critical for the theater and the city as part of the development of mid-block walkways which connect pedestrians with the entire city. Three large loading bays provide direct access to the stage and double as a public plaza, with a separate entry and lobby for the 150-seat flexible theater which functions as rehearsal space and performance space for the region’s many arts organizations.
