Yale Film Archive
In designing a new home for the Yale Film Archive, Apicella + Bunton brought new purpose to the existing spaces on the seventh floor of Sterling Memorial Library. We created dynamic new spaces for teaching, studying and viewing film, making the collection accessible to all patrons. In doing so, we carved out a fitting place for film scholarship at the heart of campus.
The new center includes staff office areas, a circulation desk, specialized film archive work areas, and spaces to view multiple types of media.
Individual viewing booths allow patrons to study and compare media in specialized carrels with dimmed lighting and individual audio control.
A new screening room with raked seating and projection booth allows viewing of 16mm film as well as digital media. It is also the only 3D enabled screening room on campus.
Staff offices include sweeping views of campus from the tall seventh story windows, filling the center with natural light.
