We completed a comprehensive fit-out for the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library Technical Services department and Yale University Library Preservation department. Both departments were previously located in the heart of Yale's downtown campus. The relocation resulted in more spacious and enhanced work areas and room for growth.
Beinecke Library and Yale Preservation
New Haven, CT
45,000 sq ft
The project includes open and private offices, meeting rooms, and support spaces for the Beinecke's Technical Services department, as well as the Stephen F. Gates '68 Library Conservation Lab and preservation spaces for the University's Preservation department. A spacious lounge, kitchenette, and conference rooms are shared by both departments and provide the staff with much needed space for collaborative work and social interaction.
Subtle references to the iconic Gordon Bunshaft building on the main campus pay homage to Beinecke's history, while exposed concrete floors reflect on the site's industrial past. The main entry space features a custom designed security desk made of ebonized wood and calacatta gold marble. The patterned wood wall behind the desk references the stone and marble facade of the original building. In the lounge, classic pieces from the 1960's were selected, reminiscent of the Bunshaft period.
Meeting rooms are finished in warm tones with natural oak cabinetry and granite countertops. Expanses of glass add to the open and inviting feeling throughout the space. A state-of-the-art conservation lab includes adjacent support spaces for document treatment, exhibition services, and photography. Large, north-facing windows provide diffused natural light to the work space.
